COVID-19 Weekly Updates and Statistics for Australian Regions

Here’s a quick summary of the COVID-19 news and numbers for each part of Australia over the past week. This information is as of Friday, September 8, 2023.

Instead of giving us daily updates like they used to during the pandemic’s early days, the different states and territories in Australia now tell us about their COVID-19 situation once a week.

We’ll keep updating this story throughout the day. If you don’t see the numbers for your area yet, check back later.

Now, let’s look at each part of Australia:

Australian Capital Territory (ACT): Last week, there were 158 new cases of COVID-19 in the ACT. Right now, six people with COVID-19 are in the hospital, and one of them is in intensive care. Sadly, one person passed away.

New South Wales (NSW): In NSW, there were 1,919 new cases of COVID-19, slightly higher than last week’s 1,917. Currently, 607 COVID-19 patients are in the hospital, with 13 of them in intensive care. There were 12 new deaths.

Northern Territory: We’re still waiting to hear about the numbers from the Northern Territory. We’ll update this article when we have that information.

Queensland: Queensland has changed how they report COVID-19 numbers. They now use a seven-day average system, following the federal government’s guidelines. As of September 5, Queensland was averaging 91 new cases per day, down from 149 the previous week. There have been no average daily deaths as of September 5. Currently, there are 88 patients in the hospital, and one is in intensive care.

South Australia: We’re still waiting to hear about the numbers from South Australia. We’ll update this article when we have that information.

Tasmania: We’re still waiting to hear about the numbers from Tasmania. We’ll update this article when we have that information.

Victoria: In Victoria, there were 605 new cases between September 1 and September 7, which is a 36% decrease from the previous week. On average, four people sadly passed away each day during that week. Currently, there’s an average of 114 COVID-19 patients in the hospital, with five in intensive care.

Western Australia: We’re still waiting to hear about the numbers from Western Australia. We’ll update this article when we have that information.
