Sad News: Smash Mouth’s Steve Harwell’s Health Declines

Steve Harwell, who used to sing for the rock band Smash Mouth, is very sick and is receiving special care in hospice. The band confirmed this sad news to The Washington Post on Sunday.

Steve Harwell is 56 years old, and his liver is failing badly. He’s at home, and his fiancée is taking care of him. This information comes from the band’s manager, Robert Hayes.

Mr. Hayes said, “Even though Steve is still here with us, unfortunately, he won’t be for much longer. We ask that people respect Steve and his family’s privacy during this tough time.”

In October 2021, Harwell said he was retiring from music to focus on his physical and mental health. This decision came after a troubling performance in Upstate New York where he seemed confused.

Over the years, Harwell had problems with different types of addiction. These problems caused health issues, including a condition called cardiomyopathy, which weakens the heart muscle. This condition affected his ability to speak and remember things.

Smash Mouth started in the early 1990s and became famous internationally in the late ’90s with songs like “Walkin’ on the Sun” (1997) and “All Star” (1999). “All Star” was on their second album, “Astro Lounge,” and it made it to the Billboard Hot 100 list.

They also contributed music to the 2001 movie “Shrek.” You might remember their song “All Star” and their cover of the Monkees’ song “I’m a Believer” from that movie. Mr. Hayes said, “Steve’s unique voice is one of the most recognizable voices of his generation.”

With Steve Harwell as the lead singer, Smash Mouth sold over 10 million albums all around the world.

The band hasn’t said anything publicly about how Steve Harwell is doing. They’re still performing, but now they have a new lead singer named Zach Goode.
